Mary Flynn M’80
Mary Flynn, Liverpool, NY, died March 17, 2025.
As Sister Mary Flynn, CSJ, she served as a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 35 years. Mary was born in Whitehall, NY. After her graduation from Catholic Central in Troy, NY, Mary entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1963. She received her bachelor’s from the College of Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Rose, Albany, NY, and teaching master’s from Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Michael’s in 1980.
During her service with the Sisters of St. Joseph, Mary served communities in North Creek, NY, and throughout central and southern New York. Mary was a founder of the North Country Ministry in North Creek, where she served for three years and so succeeded in her mission that, today, the ministry is a vital, thriving part of the lives and health of many residents of the Adirondacks.
Mary’s intelligence and administrative abilities resulted in her appointment by the Diocese of Syracuse as its Director of Religious Education for the Southern Tier. Mary taught at parochial schools in Albany, Troy and Binghamton. Mary concluded her teaching service at Christian Brothers Academy of Syracuse, NY. Mary loved teaching and was beloved in the many schools and communities where she served.
Mary was a dedicated, committed member of Sisters of St. Joseph and a beloved, trusted friend to many people including former students and colleagues, within the St. Joseph community and in the outside world. She was a gifted teacher, captivating storyteller and blessed with a genuine sense of humor. Her siblings and their children loved her and sought to sit beside her.
She was generous, compassionate and innately decent. Soft-spoken, she could use her “principal’s voice” to restore quiet and order. Mary was devoted to her family and to her Sisters in Christ. Mary’s family and friends appreciate the attention and care of the staff at Elderwood Care Facility in Liverpool. She remained close friends with many members of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.
Her survivors include two brothers, three sisters and extended family.
